Headshot v Portrait

What’s the difference between a Headshot and a Portrait?

A headshot is a great way of showing what you look like, so people can quickly put a face to a name.

These images are usually (not always) evenly lit and a close up of your face. Most often, it will include a simple, plain background so you are the clear, main focus.

Think LinkedIn profile picture, or the page on a website that showcases a whole team.

A portrait on the other hand, is a more thoughtful, intentional image that tells the viewer more about you than your hairstyle.

The lighting could be more directional or emotive and the environment will be incorporated into the image in a more interesting way. Maybe you’re holding a bunch of flowers from your shop, or sitting in front of your sewing machine.

Portraits are perfect to use on your website, social media platforms and newsletters to build a strong connection with your audience and invite them into your world.

➡ I prefer to describe myself as a Portrait photographer because I'm more drawn to building images that tell your whole story, with creativity and pride at their core.

Each Portrait above, describes the sitters character through lighting, styling, location and expression.

I don’t believe you can sum yourself up in one image - but the truth is, you don’t really need to when you have a variety of them at your fingertips! 🌻
